TPO White Rubber Roofing

What is TPO?

The TPO membrane was first introduced to the roofing market in the early 1990′s as a more economical and efficient alternative that was thought to replace PVC roofing products which adhere to a wider variety of surfaces with economical solvent based adhesives. TPO is a single ply roofing system that consists of a blend of rubber and plastic membrane. The membrane is 30 Mils thick. Common fillers used in TPO manufacturing include but are not limited to fiberglass and carbon fiber.

Durability of TPO

In comparison to other thermoplastic membranes, TPO resists mold growth, dirt accumulation, tears and impact punctures. It is made to be flexible and can allow for a home’s or building’s movement or settling. Reinforced TPO membranes can handle a building’s thermal expansion and contraction more effectively than other single ply roofing products. Because TPO has only been on the market a short while (since1990’s) there is not enough information to form a scientific conclusion for the average useful life of this material in years. However RV internet blogs and TPO installers say 15 years have been the norm so offering a 12 year warranty with their installation has not been a problem.

Disadvantages Of TPO

The surface of the membrane is white on both sides which significantly reduces solar load and the effects of high thermal conditions, however, under continued extreme temperatures exceeding 160 degrees Fahrenheit surface temperature TPO may sometimes crack which would require a lap sealant application into the crack to maintain a watertight condition. Please keep this in mind when selecting this product.

Adhesives required for TPO installation

TPO and EPDM roofing can be applied using the same formulation for porous substrate like wood. Dicor water-based non-solvent acrylic adhesive is environmentally friendly and user safe. Special formula gives you more open time for installation, and many re-tack opportunities. Provides excellent coverage and is easy to apply. Use on moisture absorbent substrates, NOT on metal, fiberglass or membrane to membrane applications. Most RV substrates are wood. However, only TPO will adhere to non-porous surfaces including metal, fiberglass and wood & concrete using solvent-based adhesive

TPO membrane material is sold in WHOLE FOOT increments. Orders for fractions of a foot will be rounded up and your card will be charged for the additional fraction of a foot.
